An important New World development in Voodoo, Petro is a group of rites distinguished by the violent energy and practical directness of their Loa, their purposes, and their ceremonies.

It is understood to have been founded in the year 1768 by one “Don Pedro” and its development is believed to have contributed to the subsequent liberation of Haiti from the French.

The Petro Loa aspects are generally more fiery, and occasionally aggressive. They are predominantly associated with the New World, and with Haiti in particular. The include Loa aspects such as Erzuli Dantor, Marinette and Met Kalfu.

In addition to their personal colours, the Petro aspects of the Loa are associated with the colour red.

Traditionally many practitioners of Petro Voodoo have been classed as Bokor, rather than simply Houngan or Mambo.
